MS 8th Grade “Rube Goldberg Machine” Demonstration

Dear Parents,

The 8th Grade Science team is writing to tell you about an exciting project we are embarking on in our class.
Over the last few months, 8th Grade Science students have been learning about the physics of force, motion, work, power, simple machines, and Newton’s Laws. As a continuation of their studies and as part of their Semester 1 Final, students are required to challenge themselves to collaborate in a small team to design and build a 10 Step Rube Goldberg Machine that highlights all of the simple machines at least one time. A Rube Goldberg Machine is an overly engineered or overdone complex machine, contraption, invention, device, or apparatus to accomplish a simple task. To see a great example, go to YouTube and search for “Honda – The Cog.”
On Friday, December 13, after school, 8th Grade students are required to present and demonstrate their Rube Goldberg Machine. Families are cordially invited to join us in the KIS Conference Hall from 3:30-5:00. Students will need to stay until 6:00 to assist with dismantling machines and clean up. It should be an exciting and entertaining science event.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.
